40 Year Old Virgin

Since there’s an upcoming session at SMX advanced titled “Buying Sites for SEO“, I figured the timing is finally right to hit the publish button on a post I wrote long ago about finding quality sites to purchase for SEO benefits.

The first time that I published this was about 2 1/2 years ago, and I was quickly asked by a well known SEO expert and friend (I won’t name any names, but he’s on the panel at the “buying sites” SMX session) to remove the post and wait until buying old virgin sites was common knowledge.

So this year make a resolution to never, ever do this again and just insert some code to handle the date for you. Examples in a few different languages are included below as well as a javascript version for static HTML pages:

I wish I would’ve had time to finish/publish this post when I started it, but oh well. Better late than never I guess.

Sigh…what a crazy couple of weeks it’s been…yes I’m referring to Google’s scare tactics on paid linking and link networks. To be honest, I’m still trying to make sense of it all. It definitely left me scratching my head about some of the sites that were affected, including a few of my own.

Two For The Money

That’s one of my favorite recent movie quotes, and it certainly lends itself well to the life of a competitive webmaster/SEO.

For about the past year, I’ve been supplementing my income by purchasing (and in some cases creating) sites for the sole purpose of later repackaging and selling at a higher price. I’ve also gotten WAY more serious lately about domaining, or SEOmaining as it’s been coined, which is a much more accurate description. I’ll save that for a future post strictly about my experiences so far with domaining.

To be 100% honest, the emails from scam/misinformed SEO firms are too frequent to address, which is unfortunate.

Instead let me take a minute to express my annoyance with yet another example of the hypocrisy that we face daily from Google. The “do as we say, not as we do” examples are piling up and getting really old. Guidelines should apply to both search engine and webmaster alike, or not at all.

Yesterday I wanted to change the look and feel of this blog pretty badly, so I quickly found a new and easy to customize theme. Once uploaded, I spent maybe 5 minutes editing a few php and css files, and I’m done. You gotta love that.

To be honest I was pretty nervous about the whole situation, since WP can be a little buggy at times and especially because I’m not talking about a minor upgrade here. I’m talking all the way from version 1.5.2 to the most current 2.2.1 (yikes).

Luckily, I found a very easy to use plugin that was just updated a few days ago with tons of bug fixes. The plugin is called WordPress Automatic Upgrade, and it does…well, just that. You can select from either a wizard style interface for upgrading or click one button and watch the automatic upgrade happen via a progress meter. Very useful for a ~~lazy~~ busy person like myself.

It’s one of only a handful of “must submit to” directories for any small business owner, right up there with Yahoo (when appropriate) and DMOZ. With the exception of temporarily placing nofollows on some listings, they’ve done a great job and have had surprisingly good customer service in my experiences with them over the years. I always appreciate companies that regularly call or email their customers just to check in and see how things are going. It’s simply good customer service and can definitely lead to increased sales, but I won’t go off on a customer retention lecture (just yet).

1) looking for employees but don’t want to pay the high costs of recruiters, employment agencies, job sites, etc.
2) looking for .edu links but, again, don’t want to pay (man you’re cheap) and need to keep the links natural looking to remain under the radar

They understand that it takes great content to get noticed. They understand that they must get the word out about their great content in order to get other quality, relevant sites to link to theirs. They understand on-page optimization and site architecture/internal link structure. They even know about varying inbound link anchor text and formulating deep linking strategies for best results. And, eventually, the savvy site owners achieve the top organic spots in the engines.
